Prowers Medical Center
- Emergency Department Expansion – 4,700 sf
- Surgery Department Expansion – 4,900 sf
- New Physical Therapy Gym – 2,500 sf
The CPI Group completed the design and construction of three major building projects at Prowers Medical Center located in Lamar, Colorado. Projects included an expansion of the Emergency Department doubling in size and capacity; Surgery/Recovery Expansion with new operation rooms and doubling the size of Pre-op/PACU; and the addition of a new physical therapy treatment gym. Prowers Medical Center, or PMC, is the only critical access hospital in Prowers County in southeast Colorado. These expansion projects provide PMC with additional space for new services and capabilities, and greater capacity to better serve the healthcare needs of the surrounding rural community.
The Emergency Department addition features new Exams, new Trauma Room, a new ‘fully enclosed’ 2-bay ambulance garage, as well as a new walk-in patient entrance with reception/waiting/triage areas to help streamline access and the immediate care of patients and their families. The ambulance garage provides a completely enclosed space to unload patients; protection from the harsh winters and hot, dusty summers. Which was previously served by only an open canopy cover at the entry door. Additional exam rooms, infectious isolation, and a 2-bay Trauma are also a part of the new addition, allowing for more critically designed spaces to meet the patient’s needs.
The Surgery Department expansion included major expansion and upgrades to the existing department. Previously with two small OR’s (by today’s standards), the new plan retains one of the original operating rooms and added two additional new operating rooms, including capability for full orthopedic joint replacement capabilities. Prior to the renovation, pre-op and post-op patients were cared for in one combined location. The new upgrades created distinct and separate areas for both pre-op patients and post-op patients; creating a better healing environment for patients and nursing staff.
The new physical therapy treatment gym created much need space for PMC to provide additional new equipment, new treatment programs and expanded rehab-services for patient and community care.
These projects allowed for program expansions, reduced loss of business to out of town providers, and provided the hospital with increased admissions resulting in increased in revenues. PMC’s leadership team has received several performance awards which they have attributed to the expansion projects. The projects provided PMC with increase capabilities to meet patient care demand in the rural southeastern Colorado region.
