The $40M grant by Denny Sanford facilitated the development of the comprehensive pediatric care hospital known as “The Castle.” Careful attention was given to every aspect of the child’s experience beginning with the Camelot imagery from the parking lot and the arrival into the “Great Hall” entry way, to the detailed murals and paintings on the technical equipment that soften the ambience of the treatment environment. The healing journey imagery permeates all aspects of the total patient care approach making special accommodation for family participation throughout. The Castle saw its first patient in March 2009.
