Equipment Planning & Procurement
The CPI Group joined The Children’s Hospital implementation team fourteen months into construction in February of 2005. The project had a working equipment list projected at $86M and an equipment budget of $55M. It was The CPI Group’s responsibility to lead the contract negotiation efforts in aligning the equipment costs with the project budget without compromising the planning efforts or level of services offered by the new facility.
We formatted and mapped our automated requisition process so that it could be uploaded directly into the hospital’s PeopleSoft procurement and accounting software. In addition, the output from our online database, InteMationTM, was formatted, mapped, and uploaded directly into the hospital’s Archibus system, to become the basis for the hospital’s asset management program at the completion of the project.
CPI provided the full procurement, management, and receiving of all medical equipment, as well as installation of all owner-installed equipment. In addition we coordinated the move management and scheduling of all existing equipment including on site participation in the 126 patient move on Oct.10, 2007.
- Total project cost of $560M
- 270 beds
- $55M equipment budget
- 34,000 items managed
- Hand-delivered across 1.4M sf

Equipment Procurement & Transition
Reid Hospital & Health Care Services oversaw the construction of a total medical center replacement program consisting of the hospital, a JV ambulatory surgery center, and a medical office building. The three year construction schedule concluded with the first hospital patient being seen on September 10, 2008.
The CPI Group led the medical equipment contract negotiation, analysis, procurement, receiving, and installation coordination for the $46.8 MM medical equipment budget. In addition to medical equipment, we incorporated the food service equipment, laundry, IT, and furniture into our online data management program InteMationTM for project budget tracking and change management.
We mapped our automated requisition process to be uploaded directly into Reid’s Lawson procurement and accounting software system to minimize staff time and data errors, and maximize the efficiency of the requisition process.

- 238 beds
- $48M equipment budget

Equipment Planning
The $40 Million grant by Denny Sanford facilitated the development of the comprehensive pediatric care hospital known as ‘The Castle’. Careful attention was given to every aspect of the child’s experience beginning with the Camelot imagery from the parking lot and the arrival into the ‘Great Hall’ entry way; to the detailed murals and paintings on the technical equipment that soften the ambience of the treatment environment. The healing journey imagery permeates all aspects of the total patient care approach making special accommodation for family participation throughout. The ‘Castle’ saw it’s first patient in March 2009.
- Total project cost of $60M
- 146 beds
- $7M+ equipment budget
- 4,400 items managed

Equipment Planning
Following on the heels of its successful Children’s Hospital, Sanford Health continued their expansion with the addition of a Heart Hospital to their campus. Sanford’s heart health program has been growing for nearly 30 years, but much of their cutting-edge technology had been relegated to various available spaces within the existing hospital. The time had come for creating a dedicated space for their patients and specialized staff.
The CPI Group has previously worked in close collaboration with Sanford’s Supply Chain Management Group. Sanford Health is furthering this partnership with The CPI Group for medical equipment planning on their new Heart Hospital. Our team has been tasked with creating an equipment plan for all new needs as well as the integration of Sanford’s existing state-of-the-art systems, including: Heart Score CT, Excimer Laser Angioplasty, and the 64-slice CT imaging. In an effort to provide the highest level of care to it’s heart patients, this new space will be home to Hybrid/Cath OR suites, Endovascular OR’s, Cardiovascular OR’s, and a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
- Total project cost of $70M
- 64 beds
- 190,000 square feet
- $20M+ equipment budget
